The main goal of AGquadro society is the economical optimization of everything is related to Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), from the primary treatment to the final sludge disposal, by using an open-minded approach to the problems and mixing the latest technologies with old knowledge and real-life experience on the field.
In water treatment, It is well known that biological masses at the end of their task become the so-called sludge. Plant managers need to remove it from the process, but disposal has reached a huge cost today (about 180 €/ton), that seems to increase very quickly in the near future. The high costs are due to high humidity and weight of sludge, that after mechanical dewatering contains at least 80% of water and 20 % of dry solids.
The disposal of such a sludge is very difficult, uneconomic and environmentally unsustainable. AGquadro and its engineers are working to find a sustainable solution, the feasibility project for a Solar Sludge Drying System made for Gioia Tauro WWTP is an example.
The Gioia Tauro treatment platform is the largest in Calabria with its 40.000 square meters of areal extension.
The influent wastewater are both civil and industrial and come from about 16 different municipalities, for a total of about 280.000 population equivalent (PE).
Then it was decided to study the application of a solar drying system that, as many studies demonstrated, has good results in southern climate conditions.
Solar drying system is based on the greenhouse effect created within the structure where the sludge is spread and mechanically mixed with a mixing device in order to better get dried.
What it needs to focus on is the realization of a good controlling system that measures aeration, humidity, temperature within the greenhouse and a control system of fans which allows the air circulation with fresh air inlet and exhaust outlet.
The valued percentage of the different work categories above the total amount in such a project are:
– metal carpentry and coverings ≈ 23%
– civil works ≈ 25%
– electromechanics, remote control system ≈ 52%.
The estimated needed surface is about 1700 square meters and the annual earnings between disposing non-dried sludge and dried sludge is about of 408.000 €/year.
The cost of the whole implementation for the Gioia Tauro project is about 1.180.000 € with an estimated recovery within 1,5 ÷ 2 years.
